Worked on a number of creative projects for Carolina Premier Bank, a small bank, or "community" bank, in Charlotte, North Carolina (home to some of the country's largest banks). The CEO was a visionary-style leader who saw the value in doing the type of creative work the big banks were too conservative to do. Going right at the large banks, I came up with the concept of printed Valentine's Day cards which encouraged unsatisfied big bank customers to leave their relationship and come to a bank that really cares about them.
When the bank opened a new branch, we did a "lost wallet" guerilla marketing tactic, dropping them around the neighborhood for people to find. There was a $10 gift card, and messages and the new location accordian folded from the interior just like photos in an actual wallet. This was done at Saturday. Concept and copy, me; John Howard, design.
In many parts of America, especially in the south where Carolina Premier is located, the porch is a symbol of hospitality and community. It's where you can wave to your neighbors or invite them over for cold beverage and conversation. The bank had unused space in one branch and wanted to use it to communicate about it's relationship-centric, community-minded approach to banking. The proposal was to design a full scale front porch as an immersive experience for visitors. My role in this was conceptual, sketching the idea out for the bank and its builders. Components included authentic materials and artifacts such as rocking chairs, tree swing, tin roof and American flag. The aesthetic and entire experience conveyed feelings of nostalgia and hospitality, playing well with their demographic and aligning with their unique proposition.
For Carolina Premier's headquarters branch, I designed signage and wrote messaging to fit a number of needs. They needed a large logo sign for an entry but only had two short walls—so I designed a custom stainless steel corner sign. A number of nostalgic touches were dotted around the branch, like an old vault and a teller window, plus themed rooms. For each I created signs that met the theme and added small museum-like plaques to further articulate the meaning behind the room name or artifact. I also created feature signage for their mission, values and the founding of the first headquarters branch.
